Why Upgrade the Link at All?
Riders who benefit most from the Cascade Components link are typically aggressive riders or those looking to change the feel of their rear suspension in a new way. Many of these riders have already tried all possible combinations of volume spacers, different shock pressures, various spring rates, or even fully custom shock tunes – but still couldn’t achieve their desired setup.
While a new link can be an excellent upgrade for many riders, it’s not necessarily suitable for everyone. Cascade Links make bottom-outs harder to reach, which may not match every riding style or bike setup.
What Does a Cascade Components Link Do?
Replacing the link on your bike with a Cascade Components Link changes the frame’s suspension kinematics. It alters suspension characteristics that standard shock settings can’t adjust. Cascade Links increase suspension progression and add more rear travel.

What Is Progression?
Progression measures how the force required to compress the suspension increases as the suspension moves through its travel. Greater progression allows the suspension to be softer at the beginning of the stroke and gradually firmer toward the end.
Why Would You Want More Progression?
An ideal suspension setup is soft enough at the start to absorb small bumps and track the ground – which improves grip and control – while being firm enough at the end of the stroke to avoid harsh bottom-outs.
Bikes with limited progression force riders to choose: set the suspension soft for grip (but hit bottom too often), or firm for support (but lose comfort and traction on roots and rocks).
A bike with more progression gives you the best of both worlds – excellent small-bump compliance and strong bottom-out resistance. Cascade Components links allow for balanced suspension performance without relying on overly stiff springs or heavy damping.

Here’s an example of a comparison chart showing the changes in progression between the stock link and the Cascade Components link on a Specialized Turbo Levo.
If the Cascade Link Is So Good, Why Don’t Bike Manufacturers Design Their Bikes This Way from the Start?
Manufacturers need to cater to a broad range of riders and models. Their bikes must work for the majority, so they design accordingly. Cascade Links are targeted at a smaller group of riders who want to change their bike’s characteristics in a way that might not be suitable for everyone.
Can’t I Achieve the Same Results Just by Adjusting My Shock?
In general, no. Adding more volume spacers (tokens) can help reduce bottom-outs, but often leads to a harsher feel and faster rebound at the end of the stroke.
Adjusting air pressure can improve grip or bottom-out resistance, but most bikes can’t achieve both at the same time without changing the link.
