IBIS CYCLES has one of the most heartfelt and genuine origin stories in the cycling world. The company was founded in 1981 by Scot Nicol, now recognized as a pioneer of modern mountain biking. It all started in a garage in Mendocino, California, right in the middle of where sandy trails wind through towering redwood forests. The very first bike was built by hand, with humble resources—and a whole lot of passion.

But Scot didn’t just want to build bikes—he wanted to create something different. Something that embodied freedom, playfulness, and technical excellence. When it came time to name his new brand, he drew inspiration from the Ibis bird—slender, elegant, and graceful in flight. It captured everything mountain biking should be: lightness, freedom, beauty.

From the very beginning, IBIS stood out. Every bike was handcrafted and tested rigorously on legendary trails in California and Colorado like Pearl Pass and Downieville. Thanks to their playful geometry and outstanding ride quality, IBIS bikes quickly attracted attention. It didn’t take long before they were seen among the very first serious trail bikes—built for technical riding, but always with soul.

Throughout the ’80s and ’90s, IBIS became synonymous with bold design, experimental materials (steel, titanium, carbon fiber), and design innovations—including the famous “Hand Job” cable stop, a hand-crafted symbol of boutique bike making.
